Our Story

The Christian and Missionary Alliance

North Seattle Church is part of an organization called The Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA). The C&MA was founded by A. B. Simpson in 1887. Simpson had left a lucrative pastoral position in New York City when he heard a call from God to reach the immigrants in New York City that his church didn’t want to touch. Eventually, a network of people from many denominations came together in God’s power to reach not just immigrants in New York, but people all around the world.

This network of churches grew and was formed around a very basic statement of faith that encouraged all who could agree to partner together in an effort to have maximum impact overseas. This “alliance” of churches grew until 1974 when the C&MA officially declared itself to be a denomination. During this time A.W. Tozer and Dr. Louis L. King greatly influenced the Alliance. The organization as a whole was overhauled and all missionary efforts were aimed at raising up indigenous church leaders to be self-supporting, self-propagating and self-governing entities.

The work of the Alliance has always been focused on reaching unreached people groups both locally and globally. This emphasis has led to work in over 81 countries and territories. In 70 of these countries, more than 700 US workers are caring for the sick, befriending the lonely, and introducing people to Jesus.

North Seattle Church

North Seattle Church was formed in June of 1955 when University Gospel Tabernacle (est. 1902) and the Oak Lake Tabernacle (est. 1891) merged. Our existing property on the lake was purchased and a dual-purpose room (gymnasium and sanctuary) was completed and dedicated on June of 1959. In 1970-71 a major building project was undertaken to add our existing sanctuary followed by the addition of our education wing. From the very beginning, North Seattle Church has been focused on building relationships with neighbors surrounding Haller Lake. A gym/sanctuary was intentionally the very first building built out of that desire to connect with the people in our neighborhood. It’s with that same heart that we continue to exist today engaging both locally in our neighborhood and globally.
